Window curtains can be hideously expensive these days. The problem is that you need a lot of fabric to make curtains and it needs to be quality fabric at that so that it doesn’t fade and wear out too quickly. Then you have to add in the making of the curtains, the lining, the tiebacks and whatever else you need. If you are working with a limited budget but still want great window coverings to enhance your home don’t despair.

Here are 8 tips to help you out:

If privacy is not an issue for the room in question and you simply want to dress the window then choose narrow curtain panels which frame the window but are not wide enough to cover it. You have the illusion of curtains but not the vast swathes of material required for full curtains. If you need privacy simple blinds over the windows may suffice with the dress curtains. If you use this effect don’t however use such a narrow curtain panel that it’s obvious the curtains could never be drawn – you still want the illusion of full curtains.

A similar solution would be to use a beautiful valence over a simple roman shade in a plain toning or contrasting color. You get the designer look and privacy without paying for full curtains. If you use cheaper fabric in quantity you will get a more luxurious look than if you use too little fullness in curtains using expensive fabric. The overall cost will normally be less too. Enhance plain, cheaper fabrics with expensive edging such as beading or fringing and you will get a designer look at a fraction of the price. Embellish your tiebacks too to match.

If you have standard sized windows then you can often buy ready-made curtains more cheaply than having them custom made to fit your windows. Ready-made are available in many great design so you are likely to find something you like especially if you shop around. Stores often have sales where you can get bargains on either ready-made or custom made curtains. Look out for special deals where the curtains are made up free of charge if your windows are not standard sizes.

Online you will not only get the best selection of curtains but you will also be able to compare prices from the comfort of your own armchair. Online stores can generally offer cheaper prices as they do not have the high costs associated with running a physical store. If you are handy with a needle you can save a lot by choosing fabric and making curtains and other custom made window treatments yourself. Window curtains are relatively easy to sew requiring you only to be able to sew in straight lines although sometimes that is easier said than done on large lengths of fabric. If you want to have a go, start with simple curtains for a small window and see how you get on before tackling a more ambitious project.
